Winchester 1897 disassembly2/2/2023 ![]() I polished the high spots and tool marks and slicked mine up. The above will get you to the beginning of J.B.Woods' chapter on the '97 in his disassembly book. The barrel is screwed into the receiver and is basically permanently installed. ![]() You then take out the magazine stop screw on the lower right side of the reciever under the ejection port and remove the magazine tube slide assembly off the front of the reciever. You have to remove the 3 screws that hold the heat shield/bayonet lug to the barrel. When I took mine apart, I was glad to have the Chapman Gunsmithing Screwdriver set with the ratchet. NO OTHER source will give you the information needed to get it apart, they start with a take down model instructions and go from there. The section on United States Military Technical Manuals has step by step directions with pictures. ![]() The only good source for disassembly information is Brownells' Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms Parts and Assembly. They disassemble like any SOLID FRAME Winchester Model 1897. ![]()
